I decided to embark on the biggest endeavor of my life so far: going to college(!) Personal Win

I went to community college when I was 32 and graduated university when I was 37. Employer paid for it too. My CC professors were some of the greatest teachers I've ever had. They don't get nearly enough credit. Always looking for ways to save students even more money which is always nice, but also super passionate, obviously not in it for the money or the prestige!

u/Casehead 13d ago

For real, community colleges have some excellent professors.

You joke, but I’m pretty sure the only half decent professor was Professor Kane. The others were alcoholic, delusional, bloodthirsty or otherwise insane.

15

u/Muslimhottie69 13d ago

He held a mock trial during class over a murdered yam.

6

u/benh141 13d ago

You think Professor Kane gives out A-'s?

I started out in CC and did some Cisco classes there. One of my teachers was one of the authors of the course's book. He was one of the best teachers I've ever had. The dude was also a fucking lumberjack who dried his own wood for carpentry work.

I went to a ~#2 engineering school for undergrad.

The vast majority of my professors were heavily into research and advised graduate students doing their master’s and PHD’s. Most had never left academia to experience the professional world, and most basically had to teach one class per semester as penance for being on faculty.

University research professors are there because they bring in money for graduate research. Not because they love teaching.

Straight facts they're committed asf

2

u/slimthecowboy 13d ago

Agreed. My mom was one for most of my life. On the other hand, there are some truly incompetent ones too. And when you were raised by a good teacher, the bad ones really stand out.

Scottsdale Community college has a better film program than Columbia. I switched halfway and was shocked that I was given more opportunities in a CC than an elite school.

I went to the same CC as he is going to and can’t echo your statement enough. Had such great teachers for the most part who took an active interest in their students. The single best teacher I’ve ever had was there and he really cared about his job and teaching really seemed to be his vocation rather than a job. Dude would sit with me after class and try to teach me jazz music theory and spent countless hours imparting his knowledge “off the clock”. That man deserves a medal and even though I was too dense to absorb a lot of what he was teaching me I learned enough that it opened many horizons for me. Thanks Dave, you are as good as they get.

I did two years CC before transferring to Uni. My CC professors were definitely better than Uni, and the class sizes were smaller.

The best teachers I’ve had have been community college professors. I was an awful student in high school, I didn’t expect to succeed in college. I was discouraged from even going.

Now I’m pursuing grad school and I do continuing education for fun. CC professors got me excited to learn, and they helped me build confidence. It’s much easier to get one on one time with the professors in CC because of smaller class sizes.

By far my best profs were in CC not university. Not even close.

3

u/alert592 13d ago

The staff at CC are pretty hit or miss, I felt like I either loved or hated them, but it's easier to connect with them. The class sizes can also assist with the amount of help you can get if you are struggling. When I went to a larger university, a lot of times I'd feel hopeless if I ended up having trouble.

I can't tell what job he's getting a degree in

but I wish the lad luck nevertheless.

But I wish him luck anyways.

Once upon a time I could have went and got some schooling.

A long time ago I could have gone to school.

But alas, the sea sang its song to me once and I was hooked.

But the I was more interested in sailing the open seas, and once I tried it, I new I found my dream job.

Now it is nothing but rum and the open sea for this old salt dog.

Now it's nothing but drinking rum (alcoholic drink), and sailing the open sea for this old sailor.

Take as many analytics, machine learning, and AI coursework you can. Python and all the other machine learning languages. It's all data... how to analyze data, how to visualize data, how to help computer systems learn from and make predictions based on data, how to automate the machine learning... data, data, data.

Write an automation script while in school that can showcase your work to land your first job. Maybe it's some sort of trading algo... there are lots of large datasets on the web to play with - be sure to pick something of interest in to you. The opportunity to apply learning to a real interest of yours will really drive home the book learning.

Get all the formal Cloud vendor certifications (AWS & Google especially) you can. Put them all over your LinkedIn. This will drive employers to you - even without a lot of professional experience.

You're going to crush it and find a lot of success, I'm sure if it.

(I work in tech and know a few things)

40

u/pmMEyourWARLOCKS 13d ago

Alternatively, learn a rock solid general purpose language like C++ or Java. Get a job at a small firm and support aging code. Work 40 hours a week max with low stress. Get paid to learn whatever platform that firm decides to move to in the future. It is ok to work to live and not live to work. Being on the bleeding edge sucks.

11

u/Crocodillemon 13d ago

Thanks.

I want to make my own video game so I'll learn c++

9

u/pmMEyourWARLOCKS 13d ago

Invest more time into the artistic side of this. Unless you want to build your own engine, coding isn't nearly as big of a component as people initially believe.

→ More replies

2

u/kurimari_potato 13d ago

Unity is far more beginner friendly so i'd suggest c#. Also art side is harder for non-artists, focus more on that. Game engine does half the work for you in game development

What's funny to me is that the data science buzzword types are usually the least knowledgeable people in the office. They can recite their college brochure, but can't implement anything that isn't immediately Googleable. Their problem solving skills consist of, "hmm I've tried nothing and I am all out of ideas, better escalate".

Disclaimer: I am not directing this at anyone in this thread.

2

u/cokakatta 13d ago

My career is kind of like this but my company is more like medium size. I'm 20 years in and an expert at details of my company's industry that I never planned on being in. And on their specific software platforms. I have had ups and downs. Periods of stress when the company is reorganized (I even became contracted through another company) and when the company decides to break into something new. But overall I've got a lot of rewarding work done, a supportive team with colleagues across multiple functional groups, and had the flexibility of time off, working hours, and reasonable ways to distribute and defer my workload.

61

u/fermbetterthanfire 13d ago

That field is always booming; that’s a wise choice. Kick some ass, buddy

1

u/Letscommenttogether 13d ago

I mean it can be lucrative. But we shouldnt lie to prospects and pretend that most people end up in cubicles making a pittance or working for small to medium companies making the same pittance.

The range is so wide but the vast majority dont make more than a fine life, which I wouldnt describe as 'lucrative'.

7

u/ReverseApacheMaster_ 13d ago

I didn’t describe it as lucrative. And I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anyone talk negatively about a fine life before lol sheesh

5

u/bpwhittle 13d ago

Don’t sweat it man. He’s just a glass half empty kinda guy. Which we need; just as much as we need the glass half full folk. It’s always good to get different perspectives. Keeps the ‘grass is always greener/ browner’ mentality in check.

Fine life in this day in age means scraping and saving for retirement (and still probably running out of money and ending up in a home that requires you to sign away every asset you have), maybe a small home but most likely renting, little to no savings, living just beyond paycheck to paycheck, and enough debt for most HS students to be technically worth more than you. You wont starve but its not anything great. One medical issue in the family putting you completely to the bottom level of poverty. If you have a diabetic in the family, youre living wayyy worse than I just described.

All this requires a lowish COL area as well. Youre living with roommates in a lot of cities.

Fine as in, not bad, but less than good. Words have meaning. Almost everyone living that way is complaining about it.

Youre right, you didnt say lucrative. I dont know why I read it that way. But booming, you mean over-saturated?

2

u/Crocodillemon 13d ago

A fine line sounds terrible! How do i avoid it?

My bro went to KU and got his degree in game design and programming. He has CP and thanks to having good aids and Dragon Naturally Speaking he did very well. He told me once one of his aids gave him the best advice. This was 20 years ago but it may apply still. Find all the loading elevators in all the buildings. They tend to be faster than the regular elevators. He said it saved him tons of time. The key for me was time management. You will do awesome. I know it.

Kick ass sir.

21

u/Sad-Scar-4975 13d ago

That’s a great major!! Def wish I had knowledge in that field. Best of luck to you & happy studying!!!

12

u/Szpartan 13d ago

Never too late to learn about a field that isn't going anywhere. There are certification programs all over that are fairly affordable as well if a college route isn't your thing.

u/Crocodillemon 13d ago

STUDY PYTHON. I cannot stress this enough, do as much Python as possible. It's a massively expanding language, especially with the new focus on machine learning, AI, and pseudo-intelligent algorithms that the compsci field is diving headlong into. I'm a biomed scientist by trade and I'm currently trying to learn Python because almost everyone wants you 10x more, in any data-centred field, if you have Python skills.

2

u/shall1313 13d ago

It should also be pointed out that Python is actually pretty easy. For those who have learned any other language, Python will take you a couple of weeks to get proficient (just give yourself some fun projects and you’ll figure it out). Never too late to add a language.

Stop making disabilities into super powers

16

u/GamerPopo 13d ago

Stop getting offended for others.

-3

u/CooterMcSlappin 13d ago

Lol- not gonna get into it but that’s a mighty big assumption you assuming I’m referring to others. I’m guessing you don’t work with or know many folks with disabilities?

10

u/GamerPopo 13d ago edited 13d ago

I have physical disabilities as a result of a very traumatic incident, I know people with disabilities, my job has me working closely with folks with disabilities, I have a good friend with a disability...

All of us have fun with our disabilities whether it is by joking (I tell people my skin is a result of flesh eating bacteria which is extremely contagious) or whatever. Know what I have learned is the best way to ask an individual what their disability is? Keep in mind, this comes from classes for interacting with the disabled which are put on by, shock, the physically disabled for first responders, "what is your super power?"

Know what is really offensive to just about any human being? Being offended for them or assuming they should be offended.

But whatever. You do you. If the OP is offended by my joke, then I will happily apologize to him for the joke...but I will not apologize to him for YOU being offended. Nor will I apologize for treating those with disabilities as if they are human beings with their own individual senses of humor and personalities.

4

u/TristenDM 13d ago

I bought a cape for my disabled daughter and made mugs which say 'what's your super power?' for her. Can confirm everything you say.

3

u/GamerPopo 13d ago

Thank you, it sounds like your daughter has a good, caring father!

3

u/meliyogi 13d ago

OMG. Drop. That. Mic. 🙌

In all seriousness, I completely agree with you. I am all for supporting and being an advocate for others (where appropriate and possible), but show the support in ways they want to be supported, and not the ways in which YOU think they want to be supported! If you don’t know how they want to be supported, then ask. Otherwise, words should remain as thoughts.

2

u/Shawty_finna_get_got 13d ago

Yeah but isn’t IT like a back office job?

Just curious because in the UK the support staff is a bit different than the front office. May be the other way around in the us.

4

u/Dptwin 13d ago

I'm not sure what you are asking. IT is a huge field, not just tech support. Cybersecurity to programming can be considered IT.

Now if you are thinking of entry level positions something like a help desk role would be considered "back office". Users call asking for help or they make a ticket and the Help desk staff fixes their issue, either remotely or in person.

3

u/glemnar 13d ago

Programming is mostly not considered “IT” in the states. Developer/engineering. That’s not to say some folk in IT don’t have programming experience

YESSSSS!! Enjoy every minute and if you get overwhelmed, remember that EVERYONE gets overwhelmed in college - reach out for support when you need it. You’re going to LOVE it!

My friend has a rare thing that doctors say is a form of palsy. He rides the same chair as you and he spits bars. We went to college together. Used to freestyle all the time. He’s a hip hop producer now. You’re gonna do great things!

Disabled people get tired of it all the time.

Ableds wouldn’t upvote typical victories like finding an open wheelchair van accessible parking spot or not having to wait on the handicap bathroom stall while a bunch of regular stalls are open.

I praise anyone who is taking the steps to improve or develop their lives. Whether or not this individual is able bodied or disabled, his post showed up in my feed and I am going to encourage him. Obviously he is proud of his accomplishment and obviously he feels he worked hard for it, so I am going to give him encouragement.

I received enough discouragement in my life, based on my height, my way of thinking, my injuries, and so on...I will encourage as many people as I humanly can.

However, I understand your point...I often get told how brave and tough I must be and folks don"t understand how much screaming I am doing on the inside from PTSD.

Um… maybe because his successes were harder to achieve than the average person? Can you imagine all the shit he had to go through? (physically, mentally, and socially) we didnt upvote because hes a disabled guy. We upvoted because he achieved something many of us cant even imagine.

Enjoy to the fullest- my uni years were the best- experiment as much as you can, make life long friends, and discover who you are while learning what you love! I have a PhD , but 50% of my uni was human experience
