In Highschool, my friend Karina slipped on a banana and I think it was the first time we had all seen it happen in real life. The feeling of pure, slap-stick comedy transcends all barriers. We all laughed our asses off.

I fell over on a banana skin running for a bus on a really busy road, all the people around me were just staring in disbelief. I went home crying (at the age of 16) and when I finally mustered up the courage to speak, my mum absolutely lost it and posted about it on Facebook?!

Edit: here’s the status

u/ilovehamburgers 1d ago

Damn, your mom did you dirty!

172

u/white_android 1d ago

Nah the banana peel did her dirty. Her mom just did natural mom things, which is a great reason not to be friends with your mom on social media.

20

u/wutang111 1d ago edited 1d ago

Man I'm so glad I was born when I was. When I was in high school there was like maybe 2 mom's from my high school on facebook, and they were weird as FUCK. 2008 was a simpler time.

I deleted my Facebook in 2012, and then a year or two later the exodus of boomers came. I haven't used social media outside of reddit in a good decade.

When I was in middle school I wasn't even allowed on Facebook. It was a website purely for college students. If you wernt in college, you couldn't join. It was just a big group chat for your school.

8

u/Bogdi504 1d ago

Imagine reddit being invaded by boomers

6

u/white_android 1d ago

Reddit has a large amount of them. They tend to use different subreddits.

3

u/RyeBreadInTheOven 1d ago

I must know these subreddits to see the memes my grandma likes

3

u/white_android 1d ago

If she's a gardener like mine she might enjoy some of the plant subreddits like r/houseplants. Definitely seen some ridiculous memes in them.

2

u/Frizen1312 Meme Stealer 1d ago

We will all become boomers someday so it is inevitable

3

u/1Eternallylost 1d ago

When I was 16, we didn't have facebook, or twitter.

Or email, for that matter. In fact, the internet was just some college nerds talking to each other via computers connected to phone lines. Cell phones were bigger and heavier than bricks, and cost over $2000. Microwaves were all the rage, though. As was touch tone dialing. Cable TV was just in the big cities but we all expected it to reach us in the next 10 years or so. Google or Yahoo didn't exist. In fact, Microsoft wouldn't become a publicly traded company for another couple of years. Apple was just for college kids while IBMs were for corporations. But we all spent a lot of money at the video arcades playing asteroids, centipede and Ms Packman.

I'm sorry but this is too funny, can't believe your mom posted it on Facebook!

21

u/Amelaclya1 1d ago

Don't worry. My mom laughed her ass off when I came home crying because I got splashed by a truck that drove through some slush and I was covered head to toe.

After she was done laughing, at least she gave me a ride to school though.

2

u/NYCQuilts 1d ago

A sewage pipe broke open just as i was riding my bike through and couldn’t stop. Called my BF to meet me outside with a bag and bucket of water. He later confessed that he laughed while he was waiting for me, but felt bad after he saw how awful it was.

Friend in middle school wanted to make a point of proving how cartoon physics was broken, threw his banana peel down on the pavement at lunch, stepped on it a few times, and then on the last step, slipped and fell on his tuches and everyone laughed.

What I want to know is, who was stepping on banana peels in LA back in the Looney Toons era to give the writers ideas? Was there a huge epidemic of monkies roaming Hollywood Boulevard?

19

u/Cuchillos_Adios 1d ago

It originally was social commentary against how dirty New York streets were.

18

u/conflateer 1d ago

Specifically with horse manure. Vaudeville comedians would substitute a banana for the pratfall since no theater owner would allow actual manure. But the audience got the joke. A great many Hollywood workers came from the vaudeville tradition, so they knew it too.

16

u/white_android 1d ago

TIL the banana peel slip was based on horse shit slips.

2

u/PrincessDie123 1d ago

Oh gosh they could sun in goose poop too. There’s a conservation program for Canada goose in my city but the gaggle has forgotten now to migrate so I had the unfortunate privilege of learning goose poop doesn’t freeze in the winter and it’s extremely slippery especially when paired with decaying leaves on a frozen ground

I remember me and my sisters as dumb little shits wanted to find out if this worked in real life, because we couldn't imagine it. We, in our eternal 10 year old wisdom put a banana peel on the floor and ran back and fourth in that room until one of us actually did slip on the banana peel and we ran off crying to our parents who thought we were being idiots lmao.

2

u/Bungus_Rex 1d ago

"who knew we were being idiots" fixed that for ya there, pal. wink

2

u/oowop 1d ago

I'd feel less uncomfortable if you used a winking emoji here

34

u/SkunkMonkey 1d ago

Same thing happened in our school. Someone dropped a banana peel just out side the school doors on a sidewalk with a slight downward slope.

We sat there and watched and waited. Sure enough, some girl comes along not paying attention and did the full cartoon fall, feet went straight out in front of her and she came straight down on her ass.

We howled with laughter because it was a straight up cartoon fall. She was fine, sore butt and bruised ego, but no serious injury as she didn't whack her head on the concrete.

9

u/Amelaclya1 1d ago

Not a banana peel, but I fell like that on a wet floor - basically enacting the stick figure on wet floor signs. I was fine at first, but stiffened up later and then was semi paralyzed for like a week. Also my tailbone hurts to this day if I sit wrong - 12 years later.

6

u/white_android 1d ago

Should have sued for the lack of signage.

4

u/Amelaclya1 1d ago

There was a sign. I just wasn't paying attention. It was at work, and I was rushing to get somewhere. It was my first week at that job too, and I really didn't know my options or rights until it was too late. 🤷‍♀️

2

u/MisanthropyIsAVirtue 1d ago

I’ve seen those wet floor signs, but shaped like a banana peel.

2

u/bluegrassblue 1d ago

Got lucky you. Girl could have sustained life-long injuries. Ya never know right?

2

u/SkunkMonkey 1d ago

Yeah, I doubt we would have been laughing if she cracked her head, but she went down and landed in a sitting position and never fell backwards.

6

u/Psyk0Tripp 1d ago

My cousin did this in high school, except it was at the top of a hill and she's really overweight. She rolled down the hill. Dropped out of high school that day due to embarrassment.

2

u/lordfreakingpenguins 1d ago

Somebody i know did this at warped tour '16, to this day i regret not recording as soon as i saw her walking towards it.

4

u/tacofartboy 1d ago

I was standing outside a bar with friends. There were 2 banana peels on the sidewalk just past the bar. A fella came walking and I said “Watch out for the banana peels” thinking it was all a little silly, to which the dude replied “fuck you”. He slipped and fell on his ass. It was perfect.

3

u/silliputti0907 1d ago

The cartoon thing that happens often to me is stepping on a rake or broom, and or swings on you. Think it maybe hit my face 2 or 3x l, but many times I block it.

3

u/Throwawaymister2 1d ago

Yeah, I slipped on one in college for the first time and laughed my ass off while still on the ground. I didn't think it was a real thing that could happen outside of cartoons.

3

u/broccoli-love 1d ago

And she’s still afraid of bananas to this day.

3

u/abrown1027 1d ago

Little lemon wedges work similarly, even over a floor designed to be slip resistant and wearing slip resistant shoes

3

u/Certain_Activity_164 1d ago

i also experienced that shit too in my middle school like im so curious how can a banana make someone fall so i decided to figure it out myself, i dropped an unpeeled banana on street and i ran thru it,after that my efforts paid off and my doubts were cleared

3

u/guybillout 1d ago

Yes I thought it was ridiculous until it happened to me irl as a kid

2

u/KingOfTheYetis 1d ago

It’s still a massive problem, but littering PSAs have really cut down on the errant banana peel.

2

u/Marik-X-Bakura 1d ago

A few months after my big brother went off to university, he called me one night to say that he had just slipped on a banana peel in the middle of the street. It truly transcends both distance and age.

2

u/muffpatty PhD in Phat Asses 1d ago

Same. I saw a girl slip on a banana peel in the lunchroom in middle school. I just remember it was more shock than funny. I was like, "oh shit, these cartoons are like real, man".

2

u/CrumbsAndCarrots 1d ago

Highschool…. Walking with some friends, I see a banana laying on the ground. Just like the cartoons. I think to myself “oh it would be hilarious if I fake slip on this thing.” Irl: oh no! A banana! :::slips hard af::: my legs went up above my head like a goddamn cartoon. Will never step on a banana again.
