What's crazy to me is the lawn is freshly mowed, but it's still full of trash. Goes to show how quickly it happens.

u/TwoBeeOreKnotTwoBee 12d ago

Crazy how OP isn't getting discouraged by what you said, and he's been doing this for at least a few years now.

u/otisthorpesrevenge 12d ago

Check out r/detrashed is the HQ for this but detrashers should always post on their local subreddits too (it’s more effective) - r/trashlove has the same concept

104

u/chickensoup73 12d ago

r/trashlove has a great vibe

23

u/arbivark 12d ago

just subbed to both. i've been on reddit 10 years and never heard of those. wonder what else i'm missing. i moderate /r/neckbeardnests and sometimes we have posts like this, only about people's own spaces.

u/Imaybeerong 12d ago

Plot twist: this is just an ongoing community service ordered by the judge. /s

28

u/Affordable_Z_Jobs 12d ago

My HS had a community service graduation requirement. I decided to help out the local volunteer fire department; so many DUI's, low level possession charges, and scrawny teenage me.

It was an education in trash talk that set me apart from my HS peers after every weekend. FD were quicker, but the court ordered were more original.

18

u/fuzzyfuzz 12d ago

My dumbass volunteered at an after school program for elementary school kids.

It was an education in don’t have kids.

14

u/Affordable_Z_Jobs 12d ago

You made their day "Oh wow! Grown up!", but then one just vomits randomly and you cant find Katie, but at least you know Devin locked himself in the bathroom again so he can eat toilet paper in peace.

I'm sorry, but I think I'm having a stroke. Can you explain what that last sentence says?

3

u/postictal_pete 12d ago

Nvm. My stroke resolved and I understand that the chirps from the FD were quick but the people court ordered to volunteer along side you had more original insults.

Man all the negative comments on that post and even this post make me hella depressed.

5

u/MrJoeBlow 12d ago

Don't let others' cynicism bring you down! The world is absolutely filled with good people trying to do the right thing. Although it's hard to see it sometimes, there's so much hope and love all around us. You just gotta look for it. Something I wish I could tell every cynic, including my past self

2

u/white_android 12d ago

Idk man, the amount of trash freely floating around the world is depressing. Always a good reminder to help out even if it's just a small piece of trash or even educating others especially kids about it. Newer generations have taken to tossing trash into drainage systems, made me want to punch my nephew for almost doing it, cussed him out and taught him a little about how they work and how it ends up in waterways.

What makes me depressed is that people will continue to toss trash out their windows even after they drive past someone cleaning up the area.

I just really dislike people that litter. Less so when the litter can breakdown and benefit the plants but still a douche move.

Edit: I've done it just to do it in my neighborhood and it builds back up fast. There's a dumpster on the way to each of the 3 buildings in the neighborhood. There's no reason for people to toss the trash from their drive in the lot. I guess it's more of a pissed off than depressed but also depressed because nature doesn't deserve it and neither do the people who try to clean it up. Court ordered people too. They might not want to but I'll bet they get that same satisfied feeling when they look at it after it's been cleaned up.

Lawns usually keep those mow stripes for a lot longer than you’d think. Zoom in on the left pic - thats certainly not a fresh mow

18

u/scrotal_baggins 12d ago

True, those lines are from the wheels of the mower which gets driven over many times.

Mowing doesn’t clean. It’s not vacuuming. Mowing shreds trash making it more difficult and time-consuming to pick up.

i never understood why people throw trash out of their car...

381

u/jeefray 12d ago

The reason people throw trash out of their cars: They are trash themselves and there's no more room in the car.

Ever drive behind a garbage truck, especially those used for transfers not pick ups? I used to think it was all mindless individuals too and a lot of it is but these trucks and disperse an incredible amount of trash in short order.

23

u/arbitrary_ambiguity 12d ago

A lot of it is people driving with their windows down and shit flying out. But the people who genuinely throw shit out of their cars, fuck those guys.

And the others? Clean your effin car out.

17

u/TransmogriFi 12d ago

Also: don't toss loose trash in the back of your pickup or your towed boat. I can't count the number of times I've driven behind someone with fast food wrappers and empty cans blowing out of the back of their vehicle.

If you’re wondering what the trash tag challenge is, it’s a social media challenge that involves taking a picture of a trashy area & then another picture after you’ve cleaned it up!

A few years ago one pic I posted went viral on Reddit so I hope this challenge can get going again✌️🌏

Here are a few more pics of the cleanup!

Edit: To the people that comment “doing all that for internet clout, pathetic”... you’re missing the point entirely. It’s about spreading a challenge to get other people to do the same in their communities.

Last time I posted one of these it got to the top page of Reddit and more importantly spread a challenge about cleaning up trash to many. Afterward several dozen people sent me pics of doing it themselves and THAT is absolutely what makes this challenge worth it.

105

u/WildFire97936 12d ago

u/dodgechallenger2022 12d ago

I'm wondering how long a lunch break you guys have over there, mine is 25 minutes she that's MAX, sometimes I can't even finish my lunch.

55

u/dukeof3arl 12d ago

The hell? Even the worst companies usually provide 30 minutes in the US.

38

u/shiny__things 12d ago

That's because 30 minutes is generally the minimum for it to be non-compensated. A break less than 30 minutes is time you're supposed to be paid for.

4

u/SpiderDijonJr 12d ago

When I used to work for a gas station there was never more than 1 person at the store so we didn’t technically get lunch. I would just keep a lunch behind the front counter and take bites when no one was watching.

9

u/Kilagria 12d ago

I worked at a grocery chain for a couple months, we got 15 minutes for lunch. Takes 5 minutes to get to the break room so I had about 5 minutes to eat.

13

u/dukeof3arl 12d ago

What state were you in? I believe there are differing policies by state couple with shift length being a determining factor

See if you can round up some little kids and grandmothers to help you out next time.

The sight of them having to do work because of litter might be a powerful way to prevent a lot of future littering.

This world needs more conscientious people like you. Bravo.

4

u/HoneySparks 12d ago

Fuck the haters, keep doing what you’re doing. I’m not on the same level as you, but anytime I’m out hiking or camping I pick shit up as I go. I learned 25+ years ago in scouts “leave no trace” and “leave it cleaner than when you got there.”

I'm late to this, but my 5 year old girl wanted to do trash pickup for earth day this year. People came by and thanked her and one lady even came by and have her a five dollar bill as a thank you. 3

u/ChrisRunsTheWorld 12d ago

4

u/Dennihy123 12d ago

I drive around until I find a stretch of no so recently mowed grass and spread it about. That or just shake them out into a stream. Dony worry, I reuse the bag.

50

u/FallenEmpyrean 12d ago

I propose a trashbot, preferably a bird drone, which records the license plate of the car, then personally tracks them down to deliver the trash back to their front door. I suspect there's a Pareto distribution, and the bot will eventually get most of them.

21

u/aShittierShitTier4u 12d ago

A local television news team put cameras where dumping had been a problem, took back trash to the dumpers, filming the encounters. The dumpers always tried to deny they dumped, then they got shown the video of them dumping. The news website posted names, vehicle make / model / year / plates, addresses of the dumpers! I wouldn't want to have my information on that list, the comments section was rabid, talking terror, torture, assassination....

Awesome. And yah know what I notice that infuriated me. Look at the lawn behind OP. It’s only been mowed a few days ago, you can even still see the fresh lines. Yet after just a few days there’s enough trash there to fill multiple trash bags. Multiply that by about a trillion and that’s why we are fucked.

3

u/apikoras 12d ago

Yay, this is awesome! Good job, dude.

I recently got in to litter picking and emailed my local authority asking how I can dispose of rubbish and they not only told me I can leave it with any public waste bin and linked me an app to report my trash but also sent me a free litter grabber, a load of bags to collect it in, and a really useful hoop that holds the mouth of the bags open for convenience. Now I get to exercise, take my dog out, and help the environment and my neighbours in one go - everyone’s a winner!

If anybody else has been noticing litter in their area then I’d really advice getting in touch with your local authority and seeing if there are any similar schemes so they can help you to help out. Turns out there are loads in my country at least. It’s honestly really satisfying and sure, in an ideal world our taxes would be paying somebody a living wage to do this work, but they’re not so this is the next best thing.

11

u/CaptainFeather 12d ago

Like, hanging onto your trash until you find a trashcan is such a tiny, tiny inconvenience. You have to be such a selfish cunt to litter. This is right up there with leaving shopping carts in the middle of a fucking parking space. Like ffs Karen, the cart return is 30 fucking feet away!

3

u/WhySpongebobWhy 12d ago

Part of the problem in my area is that landlords for public spaces and shopping strips keep skimping on paying for groundskeeping, so trash cans sit full for upwards of two weeks at a time, easy.

So people tend to either pile shit on top, which ends up with the wind blowing it into the street and/or lawns, or toss it out the window when they think nobody is looking.

As a truck driver the amount of garbage i see tossed out of windows on a daily basis is ridiculous.

I work in public land management and today I threw away a whole trash can. Somehow the bag fell into the can, then people tossed a bunch of fish guts in the can. We’re in the middle of a heat wave and when I found it the can was solid maggots. I did the math and a new can is cheaper than my salary to properly disinfect and clean it. I put a big trash bag over it, sealed it with duct tape, and tossed it in a dumpster. Hats off to you for doing more than your part on keeping your community clean and safe!

Bought one of those claws and went around my neighborhood picking up trash. Filled one bag. Felt good! Would recommend everyone to try.

Has always annoyed me when people litter. Was lucky to be taught about it a young age. Even when I was like 6 or 7 I would tell my friends to pick it up if they threw it on the ground. Amazes me that people can't just hold on to it till they find a trashcan or something.

I will never understand why people think it's OK to throw garbage out of the window of your car. Earlier in my life I watched someone throw away the McDonald's bag in Toronto and then the OPP pull the car over, making them pick up the garbage and then giving them a ticket.

i did that once on a bike path. the trash was all back the next day. i was reasonability pissed off.

You would think with how many people were off work for covid, this would've been done far more often. Unfortunately that wasn't the case.

Thanks for your work helping the community 👍

I don’t get why people litter. How people could go through the motions of rolling down their window, grabbing their shit, and yeeting it out onto God’s Green Earth without stopping at any point in that process to consider “Gee, maybe I’m an asshole” truly amazes me
