A hoodie that says GAY in the same font as the gap logo almost seems like a joke

38

See that's why I kind of respect Subaru.

In the 90s, based on market research, they discovered that people who bought their cars where typically unmarried 30 something middle class women with no kids who enjoyed outdoor activities. Those qualities also had an overlap with lesbians.

So what did they do? Fucking made an Ad with "Xena Lvr" as the license plates and a rainbow bumper sticker.

Did they "actually" care about rights? Probably not. But they saw an untapped, uncatered to market that that had spending power that people were ignoring because not being associated with "the gays" was more important than money.

Hell, the most popular selling Ken Doll was "Earring Magic Ken" broke all records in 6 weeks, then was pulled when Mattel discovered gay men bought it by the armful. They hated the idea of Ken being gay, because Ken was with Barbie)

Even worse, Barbie and Ken were named after the creator's son and daughter!

That means the implication of incest is better than homosexuality!

Speaking of incest over gayness: NEPTUNE AND URANUS WEREN'T COUSINS!!!!

Back in the 90s, Subaru ended up with a pretty solid lesbian customer base and mostly rolled with it. One of the few companies that actually (mostly) embraced a non-mainstream following on any real level.

392

u/chapstickninja Jun 11 '21

I love my Subaru but for some reason the only radio station it will pick up is NPR.

182

u/Vio_ Jun 11 '21

What? it's not picking up that one college radio station that only plays random European underground music with a few late night North African play throughs and then a couple times where the DJs got high and read out My Immortal to the best of their highest abilities?

(that last one actually happened)

28

Why won't we change our logo in Russia, China, or Saudi Arabia? ...Reasons.

603

u/Sumit316 Jun 11 '21

Does brand support for LGBTQ issues have any real impact, or is it just, well, branding?

Take, for example, Adidas, which has a special section of its site called the “pride pack” selling rainbow merchandise to honor Pride Month. But it’s also one of the major sponsors for this year’s World Cup, which takes place in Russia, a country with anti-LGBTQ laws that make it unsafe for fans and athletes. That contradiction throws into sharp relief the emptiness that can lie at the center of corporate gestures of “support” for the LGBTQ community.

As the general support for LGBTQ rights grows, so does the corporate incentive for brands and companies to position themselves in sync with that growing sentiment. But in that commercialization lies the disconnect: Brands promoting gay pride and the LGBTQ community may not always be consistent in actually supporting the LGBTQ community, but they still capitalize on the help that people want to give that community. It brings into question what Pride Month means, where it came from, and what we really commemorate when we celebrate it.

From an article "How LGBTQ Pride Month became a branded holiday"

202

u/plsdonttakemyname Jun 11 '21

The world cup is next year and in Qatar, but it’s the same concept.

245

u/Arsewhistle Jun 11 '21 edited Jun 11 '21

1-3 years in prison for having gay sex, in Qatar.

Adidas and the other sponsors are very aware of this, and they haven't done or said anything about it. Even further evidence that they don't actually give a fuck about LGBT people

Edit: these sponsors have had 11 years to do or say something at this point (They were announced as host in 2010)

62

u/plsdonttakemyname Jun 11 '21

Oh I wasn’t disagreeing with them I was just correcting the country. If anything Qatar may be a worse host to sponsor in since they basically use slave labor to build the stadiums. Companies don’t give a fuck about anyone.

Guessing it’s more a sentiment than a stat (he said, whooshingly). But it’s quite true that Big Tobacco wants a fat piece of that green pie. And based on their actions with cigarettes, they’re not gonna give a figgity fuck about product quality if they manage to get a real foothold. And further, they will lobby to get rid of existing quality standards in already-legal states.

But the moment it's about LGBT issues suddenly everyone is really concerned about "HEY DID YOU GUYS KNOW MARKETING ISN'T ALWAYS 100% BASED ON FEELINGS BUT SOMETIMES ON PROFIT"

"In the sociological sense, recuperation is the process by which politically radical ideas and images are twisted, co-opted, absorbed, defused, incorporated, annexed or commodified within media culture and bourgeois society, and thus become interpreted through a neutralized, innocuous or more socially conventional perspective. More broadly, it may refer to the cultural appropriation of any subversive symbols or ideas by mainstream culture."

My exwife used to buy pink m&ms during breast cancer month. This was because a portion of the profit goes to cancer research. She felt she was doing her part. I was the bad guy for suggesting skipping the m&ms during breast cancer month and sending the money saved directly to cancer research. Now I am the uncaring a-hole for wanting to send $5 to cancer research instead of letting Hershey donate $.05.

You joke but my company is actually implementing some kind of non-binary gender quota. I can't wait for every single last demographic to be tokenized so we can rejoice at it being the bronze age again.

Unpopular, drank-the-kool-aid opinion but I work for one of these megacorps, based in a country where it's illegal to be homosexual. But my partner, whom I cannot marry, is entitled to all the benefits of any other married couple in the company, no questions asked, including fully paid medical, life and disability insurance.

And I see so many people inside the company genuinely wanting to celebrate and support their LGBT+ co-workers. Maybe all these rainbow-y things might be allowed to happen by management because of the pink dollar or whatever, but it's always started by a genuine ally inside the company, pushing for a little recognition during pride month.

I do like hearing all of the opinions on this topic. There's been some good takes in the comments. Thank you for sharing.

Subaru's push to market to lgbt people in the 90's directly led to their US employees getting domestic-partnership benefits. This shit has a real, tangible impact.

Amen. I don't think many people realize what it's like to be queer and completely alone. If a rainbow shirt or pair of Converse or a new corporate logo lets some queer kid in conservative, small-town wherever get through another week of hell, I think that's worth it. Just knowing there is a bigger world out there helps.

I don't love corporations/capitalism, but ultimately companies are the people who work there. Some do push for acceptance and then we get what you have, support for your partner.

As an LGBTQ+ person, I really don’t care if companies are capitalizing on Pride. They capitalize on everything else (Christmas, Halloween, July 4th, Mother’s/Father’s Day, etc). Visibility and normalizing the existence and acceptance of LGBTQ+ people in society FAR outweighs the capitalism. I am happy to see Pride displays front and center at Target, on Amazon, and now by Disney.

For years, Disney was quietly selling rainbow merchandise without explicitly calling it Pride. But with Disney adding the Key of Inclusion to their corporate culture, they’ve gone full tilt into supporting LGBTQ+ people publicly. Despite backlash as a “family brand,” they know that publicly supporting one of their largest demographics will far outweigh any losses. And they were very vocal about BLM, StopAsianHate and other social issues in the last year. Is that a capitalist approach? Probably…but again the visibility and recognition matters.

As someone who works for a subdivision of a major global auto manufacturer, our US-based parent company openly supports gay rights and donates to organizations and sponsors Pride events. My subdivision, which is its own global company, does not. And it feels shitty. We work IN THE US HQ of the auto manufacturer. But two years ago when they hosted a Pride event, my company declined the invitation and did not inform us we were invited. So I went anyway, and it was great to feel included.

So fuck it…if companies want to capitalize on Pride month, I’m all for it. Anything that makes a marginalized group feel not so marginalized is fine with me. I appreciate the public visibility regardless. 🏳️‍🌈

Edit: And if anyone wants to question why inclusion or visibility matters, I invite you to read the disgusting amount of hateful comments on ANY major corporations’ Pride-related posts on social media. As a massive Dodgers fan, it legit sickened me to see the vitriol left by fellow fans when they posted a photo of the Pride flag at Dodger Stadium.

Yeah, I am so annoyed by this circle jerk of, "I don't know who needs to hear it, but big corporation's use marketing to sell themselves, they are not actually woke"

when its very obvious that NO ONE needs to hear it. why is everyone just realizing how marketing works and forgetting about getting social issues like queer acceptance normalized.

Im not gay and I don’t really pay attention to any of these PSA-holidays but this post and lots of these comments seem really cynical. I am pretty sure these companies aren’t making any more money than usual supporting the gays and are doing it because of either social pressures or out of altruism or a little both...
