This was before practically everyone had the Internet on their phones, in fact this before everyone had phones. I was there, on holiday from the UK with my wife, and didn't have a phone. Spent the whole day trying to call my parents to tell them I was OK from any public phone box I could find, but none would connect. Eventually, we were able to find a PC connected to the Internet which you have to pay to use, only problem is my parents didn't have Internet at all, so I emailed a friend who then called my parents to reassure them. So yes, the Internet existed but it was by no means as ubiquitous as now,

Just because you and your friends were fortunate to have access to the internet does not mean everyone else did. For many, TV was the only way the get news about what was happening at the time.

The point is that it's difficult to imagine/remember there was a time where it was difficult to get information about a major event that had just happened and all you could do is wait for someone to tell you. For a lot of people, that was their experience on 9/11, even if it's not yours.
